Born on February 8, 1993, in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Valk (175 cm, 77 kg) developed through the junior ranks in his hometown, where he stood out as a prolific scorer (319 games, 296 points) and served as captain of the Medicine Hat Tigers in the Western Hockey League (WHL).
Between 2014 and 2018, Valk was part of the Vancouver Canucks’ and Florida Panthers’ organizations, playing one NHL game, 161 games (114 points) in the American Hockey League (AHL), and 61 games (63 points) in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL).
Since 2018, his career has continued in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) with Barys Nur-Sultan of Astana (Kazakhstan) and Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg. In the KHL, Valk has totaled 418 games, recording 77 goals and 155 assists for 232 points. He also represented Kazakhstan at the World Championships in 2021 and 2022.
Valk will arrive in Ticino in the coming days and will be available to the coaching staff during the Olympic break.
HCL General Manager Janick Steinmann commented:
“Curtis Valk has mainly played as a center but can also be used on the wing. His skills will be valuable in both power-play and penalty-killing situations. He brings experience from many high-level leagues and will add depth to our roster. This gives the coaching staff more options for the second part of the season.”
