Hockey Club Lugano is pleased to announce the signing of American left-handed forward Zach Sanford for the 2025/26 season. Born on November 9, 1994, in Salem, Massachusetts, Sanford brings a strong physical presence to the team, standing 193 cm tall and weighing 94 kg. His versatility allows the coaching staff to deploy him in various offensive roles and game situations.
A native of the Boston area, Sanford was selected in the second round of the 2013 NHL Draft by the Washington Capitals. However, he chose to play two seasons at the collegiate level (NCAA) with Boston College before turning professional.
Sanford’s career has spanned both the NHL and AHL, with 359 NHL games (112 points) played for the Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues, Ottawa Senators, Winnipeg Jets, Nashville Predators, Arizona Coyotes, and Chicago Blackhawks. In the AHL, he appeared in 225 games (129 points) with the Hershey Bears, Chicago Wolves, San Antonio Rampage, Milwaukee Admirals, Tucson Roadrunners, and Rockford IceHogs.
The hype of Sanford’s career came in the 2018/19 season, when he played in the St. Louis Blues' historic Stanley Cup victory, the only one in the franchise's history.
HC Lugano General Manager Janick Steinmann had this to say about the new signing:
“Zach Sanford brings a lot of experience to our team. He is a very versatile forward that can play on the wing and center position. He is also used to play in different positions in powerplay and strong on the penalty kill. He will bring our team lots of stability and quality in all aspects of the game. The coaches will have lots of different options down the line up. I’m very happy that Zach decided to join our club and help our team this season”.
