Hockey Club Lugano announces that Mike Sgarbossa will not be able to play tonight in Zug due to an upper-body injury. Medical examinations are underway to assess the exact extent of the issue and the expected recovery time.

The injury to the Canadian forward occurred at 51’46’’ of yesterday’s game at the Cornèr Arena against Fribourg, and was caused by a loss of balance due to an object on the ice, presumably a coin. Fifteen seconds earlier, the game had been stopped for several minutes due to the misconduct of some spectators who had thrown various objects onto the ice.

Such behaviour not only disrupts the flow of the game—damaging both sport and entertainment and causing financial sanctions against the club—but also poses a serious risk to player safety, as this unfortunate incident once again demonstrates.

For Mike Sgarbossa, this means the frustration of being unable to help his teammates, as well as concern about the consequences of his injury. For the club, it adds the bitter reality of another injured foreign forward, on top of Rasmus Kupari and Brendan Perlini.

While the club understands the emotions that the action on the ice may stir among fans, Hockey Club Lugano strongly condemns the throwing of objects onto the ice and hopes that such behaviour will not be repeated in the future.
