Hockey Club Lugano is pleased to announce the signing of Canadian left-handed center Mike Sgarbossa (183 cm, 84 kg), born on July 25, 1992, in Campbellville, Ontario, on a two-year contract valid through the 2025/26 and 2026/27 seasons.
After rising through the ranks of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), where he played 286 games and tallied 304 points, Sgarbossa was the league’s top scorer in the 2011/12 season with 102 points while playing for the Sudbury Wolves. He made his NHL debut the following season with the Colorado Avalanche.
Throughout his career, Sgarbossa has been a standout player in the American Hockey League (AHL), playing for various affiliates of NHL franchises. His most memorable moment came in the 2022/23 season, when he helped lead the Hershey Bears to the Calder Cup championship, awarded to the AHL playoff winners.
Sgarbossa has been a key figure for the Pennsylvania-based team over the past seven seasons, up until last Wednesday when Hershey’s campaign ended in the Atlantic Division final against the Charlotte Checkers.
In total, he has played 93 NHL games (25 points) with the Colorado Avalanche, Anaheim Ducks, Florida Panthers, and Washington Capitals. In the AHL, he has appeared in 641 games, recording 486 points (171 goals, 315 assists) with the Lake Erie Monsters, Norfolk Admirals, San Diego Gulls, Springfield Thunderbirds, Manitoba Moose, and Hershey Bears.
Janick Steinmann, HCL General Manager, stated:
“Mike Sgarbossa is a playmaking center with great experience. He’s a skilled and charismatic player who fits perfectly into our team and the National League. I look forward to welcoming him to Lugano.”
