Find a way to win even when there is a lack of inspiration. It is one of the characteristics of a strong and solid team, aware of its own means. Defining the current HC Lugano with these adjectives is too early. But the 3-1 victory at the Resega last night against the EHC Bienne goes in this direction.
The HCL has been rather passive for most of the game, apparently tired after the two challenging games played against HC Fribourg-Gottéron and SC Bern the past weekend.
The reflexes and the concentration of Elvis Merzlikins stopped the EHC Bienne, in crisis at the moment, but ready to fight. The goal posts of Simon Rytz instead did not allow Klasen and Pettersson to score.
The game was decided in the third period. Stapleton recovered the puck in forechecking behind the net, passed it to Walker who sent a backhand pass over to Bertaggia who scored his fourth goal of the season. Martensson passed the puck to Vauclair who shot from a good position scoring his first goal of the season. Pettersson instead took advantage of an individual mistake by goalie Simon Rytz and bagged the decisive 3-0.
Patience paid off in the end. This is the fourth victory in a row for the HC Lugano, who won eight of the past ten games. At the end the HC Fribourg-Gottéron and Genève-Servette HC are not so far away in the standings.
